World Wind is an extensible 3D "real-time" planetary visualization software platform. Written in managed .NET C# code and utilizing the Microsoft DirectX graphics API, World Wind is able to composite a variety of geospatial information into a single easy-to-navigate context. World Wind combines a level-of-detail aware terrain engine with an image compositing engine, and allows for smooth transitions from atmosphere to street level. Modular componentry designed, World Wind can translate many open standard formats for both raster and vector based data, and custom translators can be easily integrated. The World Wind client is capable of retrieving information stored locally or on remotely located servers through standard HTTP protocols, such as Web Mapping Service (WMS) and soon Web Feature Service (WFS).
